Pembrey (Wales) – Sunday 28 March, 2010 – The winners of the GT Academy 2010, PlayStation® and Nissan’s quest to turn a virtual driver into a real one, were back on track this weekend. Frenchman Jordan Tresson (21) and Italian Luca Lorenzini (26) raced a pair of Nissan 370Z cars in the opening round of the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship.

With a very clear brief to finish the races, in order to qualify for the all important ‘signatures’ that the pair need to gain an International C Race Licence, the Gran Turismo® gamers-turned-drivers performed well. Saturday saw qualifying and a race, in which Tresson finished fourth and Lorenzini fifth out of 12 starters. Sunday’s second race of the weekend saw exactly the same result for the PlayStation Nissan Team. With both available signatures secured, team boss Bob Neville allowed them to take part in a third race on the Sunday. Lorenzini was running in third place when a wheel issue forced him to retire. His teammate, Tresson, went on to finish in fifth.

The pair are faced with a difficult balance in the fight to emerge as the overall winner of GT Academy 2010, and a full-season’s drive in the European GT4 Cup. With little time to spare in the pursuit of the correct licence to allow one of them to compete in the opening round of the series at Silverstone on 1 and 2 May, both drivers have to ensure that they finish all their races safely. At the same time, each is desperate to prove that he is faster than his teammate, and so the natural choice to win the drive in the 400bhp Nissan 370Z GT4.

“We are on schedule,” explained RJN Motorsport owner Neville. “The two signatures gained at Pembrey takes us to five each for the drivers. One more and they can upgrade their licences to a ‘National A’.

“However, there is still very little margin for error in our schedule to have all 12 signatures and be ready to race in the GT4s at Silverstone. So I did have to give both drivers a serious talking to after Saturday’s race at Pembrey. Both cars and both drivers are very evenly matched, so I was concerned to see Luca trying to sling-shot Jordan onto a straight as they headed towards a tight corner. Luckily Jordan pulled off-line and an accident was avoided. They are racers and both want to be the overall winner, but, at this stage, I don’t want to see anything on track that might jeopardise our programme.

“On a more positive note, both drivers are showing good car control. We have also started working with them on making set-up changes and seeing how the car reacts. Both have shown a good understanding of and feeling for the changes.”

“This weekend has been a great experience,” commented Jordan Tresson. “I am very tired now, but it was really good racing. It was nice to have a short break to go home and see family and friends, but we are back in the UK for a while now. We move into a new house tonight and will be doing some physical training this week. Then next weekend we go to Mallory Park and Castle Combe. We have been very busy watching videos of all the circuits we are racing and also looking them up on YouTube to give us an idea of what to expect.”

His Italian teammate, but also competitor for the ultimate prize of a full-season’s drive in the Nissan 370Z GT4 car, was equally enthusiastic about the weekend. “It was fantastic,” said Luca Lorenzini. “I really liked the Pembrey track. It was quite a mix of corners and quite technical. It was much nicer in reality than it looked on the videos we had watched. I was a little disappointed with my first race, I didn’t really drive cleanly. However, Sunday was better and it was a shame to have had a technical issue while I was running up in third place in the second race.

“It was good to have had a week back at home. All my family and friends were very excited about what I’m doing. Luckily my Dad is doing OK in the family garage. He has to work harder for sure without me there, but he is being very supportive about what I’m doing.”

A busy Easter weekend lies ahead for the GT Academy pair as their tour of UK race circuits continues. They will race at Mallory Park on Sunday and at Castle Combe on Easter Monday.

Re:GT Academy Silverstone 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 5
Mallory Park – Sunday 18 April, 2010 – Kazunori Yamauchi, the legendary creator of the Gran Turismo race simulation series, was on hand to inspire PlayStation® and Nissan’s GT Academy 2010 ‘final two’ this weekend. Another milestone in the incredible competition was reached when Italian Luca Lorenzini and Frenchman Jordan Tresson secured the last of the 12 ‘signatures’ required to qualify for an International C race licence. The signatures have been gained in record time, with the PlayStation Nissan Team, run by UK-based RJN Motorsport, racing in seven meetings in the six weeks since Lorenzini and Tresson were announced as the winners of the five-day GT Academy event at Silverstone.

The overall winner of GT Academy 2010 will go on to race a full season for the PlayStation Nissan Team in the European GT4 Cup series driving a 420bhp Nissan 370Z GT4 car. With the pair’s racing performances so close during their intensive training period, RJN Motorsport owner Bob Neville will make his final decision on Wednesday during a test in the new car at Silverstone, the venue for the first race of the GT4 Cup on 1, 2 May.

The weekend’s racing went without incident. On Saturday the drivers joined forces to contest the Britcar Production Series race at Snetterton. Following a delay and re-start after a start-line crash, Lorenzini drove the first 45-minute stint before handing over to Tresson. The Frenchman put in a string of consistently quick laps and brought the car home 10th out of 17 overall and third in class.

At Mallory Park, the team raced in the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car championship that they had previously contested at Pembrey. Jordan Tresson qualified two places ahead of his teammate on the short lap and held his position to finish in sixth place and third in class. Luca Lorenzini was able to overhaul the two drivers in front of him and keep pace with the Frenchman, following him home in seventh (fourth in class).

“I was very pleased to have the opportunity to come and meet Luca and Jordan and I have been impressed with what they are doing,” explained Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital and creator of the Gran Turismo series of racing simulation games, who travelled to Snetterton to meet up with the team. “GT Academy is very important to us. I think that you could be fantastic on a football game or a golf game, but the chances of you actually becoming a professional in those sports would be slim. With GT Academy we are proving that it is possible for a Gran Turismo racer to transfer their skills onto a real track and become a professional driver.”

“Another productive weekend and a great job by both drivers to gain all 12 signatures in such a quick time,” explained team boss Bob Neville at the end of another tough weekend. “We were always up against it with such a short window before the race at Silverstone, and so it was vital that both drivers finished every race safely. They have done that and also shown some impressive pace.

“It was great to host Kazunori Yamauchi at Snetterton on Saturday. He is a huge racing fan and a very good driver himself and I think he was impressed by Luca and Jordans’ achievements. It was a nice touch that they ended up on the podium for their class while he was there.

“I have a hard decision to make on Wednesday. However, I would say that the pace and consistency of Jordan this weekend has probably made him the front runner. But it is certainly still all to play for and it will be interesting to see how both of them get on in the full GT4 version of the 370Z. The power, brakes and slick tyres make it quite a different beast to what they have been driving up until this point.”

“This was an important weekend for us, especially as the Britcar race at Snetterton gave us the longest driving session we have had so far,” commented Jordan Tresson. “It was also important and very satisfying to qualify for our international licence. I am not really nervous about Wednesday. I have just been concentrating hard, learning and doing the best job I can throughout this six weeks and I will have to do the same on Wednesday and hope that it is enough.”

“This was another great weekend of racing and also great to meet Kazunori without whom we would not be here,” added Luca Lorenzini. “It felt good to be on the podium, but the competition is almost over now and so the pressure is definitely on. I hope I can do a good job on Wednesday.”

GT Academy 2010 is coming to a TV screen soon, the current series of GT Academy on Channel 4 is the story of our previous wnner, Lucas Ordonez. Watch this space for the new series of GT Academy coming soon

En de persrelease:
Silverstone – Wednesday 21 April, 2010 – Jordan Tresson has been announced as the winner of GT Academy 2010. The 21-year-old Frenchman completed a short head-to-head test today on Silverstone’s new Grand Prix circuit against friend and rival Luca Lorenzini. The pair drove five flying laps each in the 420bhp Nissan 370Z GT4 race car that Tresson will now campaign in the 2010 European GT Cup series.

The announcement of Tresson’s victory is the culmination of a process that started in December 2009 when the GT Academy time trial went live across 17 countries. Over 1.2 million people downloaded the special version of the Gran Turismo game on PlayStation®3 to enter the completion. The fastest twenty from each country then competed for their chance to attend the five-day international final, the GT Academy ‘boot camp’ at Silverstone. Jordan and Luca were chosen as the best of the 18 Academy finalists by judges Johnny Herbert, Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitz and Rob Barff. An intensive six-week period has seen them racing at various UK club races each weekend to qualify for an International C Race Licence. Both obtained their licences last weekend and headed to Silverstone for the test session to decide who would win the ultimate prize.

First up was Lorenzini, and drama as he went off the track on the high-speed Woodcote corner. With a delay, but luckily no damage, caused by his off, Jordan had to wait until after the lunch break before he took the wheel of the stunning, bright-yellow 370Z. The ice-cool Frenchman delivered a series of quick laps that left the decision clear-cut for PlayStation Nissan Team boss Bob Neville.

“I never imagined I would end up here when I was on my PlayStation back in December,” enthused Tresson, an automotive engineering student from Villers La Montagne in Northern France. “This is amazing. Racing a full season in the GT4 class is an incredible opportunity thanks to Nissan and PlayStation. I wanted to believe it was possible and I know I did a good job last weekend at Snetterton, but you never know.

“At the moment I just feel like my body is here but my mind is not! This has always been my dream. If I could spend all my time in a car then I would. I can’t wait to come back to Silverstone next week for the race. I have so much to learn from Alex Buncombe and lots of improvements to make. Luca and I will stay good friends and one day maybe we can race together again.”

“I think we have got ourselves a racing driver”, commented RJN Motorsport boss Neville. “Jordan is easy to work with, he listens, learns, gives good feedback and does what we ask. But he still pushes on and has that racing instinct. I think driving with Alex Buncombe in the GT4 Cup he will learn a lot very quickly and get quicker and quicker. The 370Z looks very good and I think we are in for a good year.

“Luca has just missed out and mainly because of race craft. On a clear track there is very little between them in lap times. However, I don’t think Luca handled the traffic as well as Jordan. We kept the shootout deliberately short to put the pressure on and Luca went off.”

Italian Luca Lorenzini was, apparently, expecting the decision. “I think I knew after Snetterton last Saturday that Jordan was the front runner,” said the 26-year-old from near Mantova in Northern Italy. “I can’t be too disappointed as this has been an awesome experience. Not just the racing, but living in the UK with Jordan, weekends with the team. I have learnt so much, but it will be nice to be able to relax now and I have no worries about returning to my normal life. If I can find funding I will certainly try to keep racing. I am really pleased for Jordan. We have become very good friends.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s PlayStation®3 brand manager Mark Bowles, was on hand to witness today’s denouement of the competition. “GT Academy 2010 has been a fantastic and very exciting process to follow,” he said. “In the end I think we have found a very worthy winner and I wish him luck in his bid to make the switch from being an ultra-quick Gran Turismo gamer to a real racing driver. My thanks go to everybody involved in the project and all of our GT fans that took part in the different stages of the competition. I said at the beginning of GT Academy that it really is a great example of our brand promise that ‘the game is just the start’, and truly all of the people that have taken part in the different stages are living proof of that. Special thanks and sympathy to Luca who did so well and a big thank you, as always, to Nissan, who are an excellent partner.”

Stranded in Switzerland by volcanic ash, Nissan Europe’s Darren Cox said: “To a large extent, I actually see today as just the beginning. Jordan must now go on to race in all six rounds of the European GT4 Cup against some tough competition. He’ll be up against Porsches and Aston Martins and he has a lot to live up to after the success last year of Lucas Ordoñez. From what I have seen for myself and heard from the team, this will not faze him at all. It sounds like we already have a real racing driver on our hands and I look forward to watching his progress. I would echo Mark’s thanks to the team and all those involved in GT Academy 2010. Our partnership with PlayStation in creating GT Academy has been very successful and it has been great to watch the competition grow this year.”

Jordan will race his first race in the European GT4 Cup in the opening race at Silverstone on 2 May
